Embrace the chance of rain on your wedding day (and still get gorgeous photos)

With all the rainy weather we’ve been experiencing lately here in Cincinnati, I wanted to share some insight and encouragement for couples planning their big day. If you’ve lived here long, you know how quickly the skies can change—one minute it's sunny, the next it's pouring. But here’s the truth: a little rain doesn’t have to ruin your wedding day. In fact, some of the most romantic, cinematic weddings I’ve photographed happened under gray skies and the soft patter of raindrops.

The secret? Preparation, flexibility, and a whole lot of grace.

As someone who’s been alongside brides and grooms worried about and living through a rainy wedding day COUNTLESS TIMES, I’ve seen firsthand how thoughtful planning can turn a potentially stressful rainy forecast into a day full of unforgettable, magical moments. Here are some tips to help you prepare for the possibility of rain, so you can stay calm, confident, and photo-ready no matter what Mother Nature brings.

If you’re still in the process of choosing a date and venue…

Choose Your Season & Venue Wisely
While no season is guaranteed to be dry, some are historically less rainy in Cincinnati—fall and winter tend to bring fewer downpours than spring and early summer. If rain is a big concern for you, you may want to take that into account when selecting your date.

When visiting venues, ask specifically about their rain contingency plans. Do they have a covered outdoor option? Can they quickly move the ceremony indoors if needed? Don’t be afraid to ask to see those backup spaces in person—just in case.

If you’ve already set a date and booked the venue but still concerned about the possibility of rain on your wedding months away

1. Consider Tent Rentals or Flooring Options
If you’re having an outdoor wedding, it's smart to look into tent rentals early—even if you're just putting one on hold as a precaution. Add-on options like clear-top tents, flooring to protect against mud, and heaters (for cooler rainy days) can make a world of difference in guest comfort and the overall atmosphere.

2. Book Weather-Savvy Vendors
This one’s a biggie. Make sure your photographer, planner, florist, and other vendors are experienced with handling unpredictable weather. At OKOTA, we’ve worked countless rainy weddings, and we come prepared with waterproof gear, flexible timelines, and creative ideas to adapt in the moment.

Is it the week of your wedding?

1. Keep an Eye on the Forecast—but Don’t Obsess
It’s tempting to refresh the weather app every hour, but try not to let the forecast stress you out. Cincinnati weather can—and often does—change on a dime. If rain is looking likely, start coordinating with your vendors and bridal party about any minor tweaks that might be needed.

2. Communicate with Guests
If there’s a possibility of rain, give your guests a heads-up. Whether it’s including a note in your wedding website or sending a quick email blast, letting them know to bring umbrellas or wear weather-appropriate shoes can go a long way in making sure everyone’s prepared and still able to enjoy the celebration.

Day Of: Let it Rain!

If the sky opens up, don’t let it ruin your vibe. You've done everything you can to prepare—now it’s time to embrace whatever comes your way.

1. Be Ready with Rain Essentials

  • Clear umbrellas – These not only keep you dry, they photograph beautifully. HERE is a link to the ones I like (clear bubble, white handle and trim, 51” or larger)

  • Waterproof makeup – Talk to your makeup artist about rain-proof options that won’t run or smudge.

  • Cute rain boots if you REALLY want to lean in, or weather-friendly if you just want to be a little extra prepared – the good thing about a wedding gown is… you likey won’t see them much either way! One’s I’m currently loving are these slides by Jessica Simpson at DSW or any jelly sandals like these…

  • Towels, blankets, and backup hair items – Just in case you need a quick dry-off or touch-up.

2. Trust Your Photographer
Some of the dreamiest, most dramatic wedding photos I’ve ever captured happened in the rain. Reflections in puddles, a couple huddled under an umbrella, soft raindrops catching the light—it’s romantic and one-of-a-kind. We know how to protect our gear and find beautiful spots to shoot, even in less-than-ideal conditions.

Rain Is Actually... Kinda Lucky
Many cultures believe that rain on your wedding day symbolizes cleansing, renewal, and a strong marriage. In Hindu tradition, it’s said that a wet knot is harder to untie—how beautiful is that?
